HER STORY

"For twenty years I helped people heal their bodies. Now I help them feed their souls."

Tricia Overvliet spent two decades in medicine — a career built on precision, care, and a deep understanding of the human body. But beneath the clinical world, something else was always pressing to get out. Paint. Texture. Feeling.

The transition from medicine to art wasn't a sudden leap — it was a gradual uncovering. Layer by layer, the way her paintings are built. First came evenings in the studio. Then weekends. Then a moment when the studio became the work, and the work became everything.

"I paint the way I once listened to patients — slowly, without rushing to a diagnosis. Letting the truth emerge on its own terms."

Based in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Tricia works in layered oils, acrylics, collage, and text — building surfaces that carry both physical and emotional depth. Her five collections — Whale Series, Mother & Child, Trees, Beautiful Wreckage, and Manta Rays — each explore a subject that moves her deeply, painted until the canvas holds what words cannot.

Each canvas begins with energy — acrylic, ink, spray paint poured on without overthinking. Then comes the collage: fragments of her own poetry pressed into the surface, words that will be hidden forever beneath subsequent layers. The painting is built slowly from that point, oils laid over acrylics, texture added and removed, until the piece arrives at something that feels true.

"Art is the imprint of the soul on the world," she says. It's a philosophy that shows in every canvas — these are not decorative objects. They are records of a life lived with attention.

HOW SHE WORKS

The Process Behind the
Paintings

Energy First

Every canvas begins with raw energy — acrylics, inks, and spray paint applied without overthinking. The goal is to break the blank canvas and fill it with feeling before the mind takes over.

The Hidden Layer

As the piece develops hidden gems become part of the initial layers, whether they be fragments of Tricia's own poetry and writing, collage or other unexpected elements are worked into the next layer. These words and elements are often partially buried under subsequent layers — invisible, but present. A secret held by the painting.

Slow Truth

Acrylics and Oils are laid over the foundation — slowly, carefully. Texture is added and removed. The painting is worked until it arrives at something that feels true. This stage takes time patience and inspiration and only the artist can know when it is finished.
